Jill Scott's mom Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on the 4th of April, 1972, in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Scott was raised an all-only daughter by her grandmother. Scott was a student at her school at the Philadelphia High School for Girls, and then Temple University after graduating. There, Scott worked two jobs while she was learning about secondary education. Her dream was to be an English high school teacher. It was impossible to realize her dream, however, when after three years of studying and becoming a teaching assistant, she left college. After starting her career performing at live poetry performances She eventually joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me is the product of their partnership. She was first outed as a performer at the Roots Show. Following that, she started working with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. She gained more experience on stage as she was a part of the Canada tour of the Broadway production Rent. She was the first artist to be signed to Hidden Beach Recordings.
